Friday Night – II
The rest of the story came to me a couple nights ago. For those who forgot the setup, here’s the beginning: Part I
“Layla” started blaring from the jukebox again. It was playing for the fifth time in a row, and two boys in hooded sweatshirts were pointing at the jukebox and laughing. TJ grinned. They must have been the geniuses who concocted this brilliant practical joke.
TJ turned to the bar. Two bartenders were arguing. The one on the right pointed at the jukebox; the other responded by raising his arms and shrugging. To their left, TJ’s advisor was talking to a couple of young women. He couldn’t make out what his advisor had said, but he noticed one of the women start to laugh. It must have been a joke. Her friend didn’t seem particularly amused, though.
TJ’s advisor turned and waved. TJ waved back, and before he knew it, his advisor had walked over with his new friends.
“Hey, Teej. This is Meg and her friend Pattie.”
“Nice to meet you,” Laughing Meg said, as Mirthless Pattie nodded.
“Nice to meet you, too,” TJ responded.
His advisor looked around. “Where’s Josh?”
“Oh, Josh had to leave,” TJ responded, wondering what had possessed him to stay. The embarrassment of having to explain why they’d ditched him Monday morning certainly played a role.
As Laughing Meg and his advisor broke away from the small group, TJ turned to face Mirthless Pattie. She looked back at her friend, raised her eyebrows, and huffed. She turned her expressionless face towards TJ.
“So what do you do?” she asked.
