What You Want Now for Free
That’s Bobak’s definition of the Internet. I wanted to watch Heroes, and I viewed almost all of them online without having to wait or pay. It was also completely legal since NBC provides episodes of Heroes for free. The caveat is there is a commercial interruption every few minutes. During a recent Q&A, Ron Moore was asked what he thought about people downloading his program illegally. His response was interesting. He said the Internet in its current state was like the “Wild West” and that over the next few years, he expected people would have legal avenues to watch what they wanted when they wanted for free in exchange for putting up with some advertising.
With web sites like Alluc.org and TV links, the definition seems to be one that scares broadcasters. The topic recently made its way into a Forbes article. Given these concerns, it will be interesting to see if innovations like NBC’s decision to make Heroes available online will become commonplace in the near future.
