The Final Countdown

If I were asked to give an example of pomposity and showmanship, it would be the beginning of any of Gob’s magic acts on Arrested Development. As he dances with that knife in his mouth, there is the sense that he considers himself to be the best magician ever to perform.

Part of what accentuates his pomposity is Europe’s “Final Countdown,” the background music that accompanies his preshow performance. At the same time, something about the self-importance of an 80’s power ballad feels buffoonish. It’s a song that has inspired at least two air bands.

Some have made a cello arrangement for it, and people who don’t even speak English want to sing it.

It even found its way into a Bollywood movie.

It’s the final countdown!

The cello arrangement reminded me of Bond. I thought one of the cellists’ heads was going to fall off at the rate he was shaking it back and forth.

The penultimate video was horrible. I barely was able to watch the entire thing.

Hahaha… it took me the first listen to realize he was trying to sing in English.
