Never be afraid to get dirty, but be sufficiently sure-footed to avoid the abyss of contamination.

Remember Shawshank Redemption? When Andy tells Red he wants to go to Zihuatanejo, Red calls it a “shitty pipedream.” Andy eventually makes it to Zihuatanejo in part by crawling through a sewer pipe, or as Red notes, “Andy crawled through a river of shit and came out clean on the other side.”

Here are two pipedreams that made the news today.

  1. NASA Plans Lunar Outpost. It appears part of NASA’s plan to return humans to the moon will include a permanent station on the moon’s south pole. While NASA does not have a great operating budget at the moment, the plans are looking far into the future. To be ready by 2024. Of course, this date might be assuming flawless missions and continued interest, neither of which has been guaranteed in the past.
  2. Musharaff Mulls Kashmir Solution. In an interview, President Musharaff introduced a new proposal to bring lasting peace to the subcontinent. This one sounds particularly interesting since he says that were his peace solution to be adopted, Pakistan would give up its claim on Kashmir. That would be a difficult offer for India to refuse. What is his proposal? It would preserve the present borders. It would also include some type of “joint supervision mechanism involving India, Pakistan and Kashmir.” Of course, statements made in an interview don’t necessarily translate to the negotiating table.

While the resolution of both of these stories have yet to be written, I wouldn’t count out either possibilty. However, getting to a resolution may require passing by a lot of foul stuff along the way.
